005: Hannibal 1x09 "Trou Normand" - Everybody in This Show is Nightcrawler

SPOILERS UP TO (and including) HANNIBAL 1x09

In this episode:
  • Discussion of Hannibal 1x09 "Trou Normand," Lance Henriksen as Killer of the Week, Will's continually worsening psychological state, Abigail's character development, Freddie Lounds and her wardrobe, and Crawford being a dick
  • Ian's still not convinced Alana isn't a sometimes-maybe-only-on-Tuesdays hallucination.
  • Abigail's life just SUCKS. I mean, SERIOUSLY.
  • Hannibal is the devil. But you already knew that.
  • Cleolinda's recaps for Trou Normand and Potage
  • Other possible episode titles: Some of Us Rebel by Digging Up Our Murder Victims; Will Graham is Not Allowed to Be Happy; Tie-In Corpse Jenga Game (I’d Buy It)
  • Berlin Confidential, an online penny dreadful that interweaves a detective story murder mystery plot with the supernatural, the mythological, and the darkness of the human psyche
  • We're still working out the details of the contest. Be patient with us, please.
(THERE'S ALWAYS AN) ADDENDUM:
  • I have no clue why whenever I say "Berlin Confidential" I put the accent on the first syllable of "Berlin," but when I say "Berlin" on its own, I put the accent on the second syllable, as it should be. Huh. Is it just me that thinks that's weird? Probably.

004: Hannibal 1x08 "Fromage" - Brain Raccoons

SPOILERS UP TO (and including) HANNIBAL 1x08 (as well as Red Dragon/Silence of the Lambs)

In this episode:
  • Hi, new listeners!
  • Discussion of Hannibal 1x08 "Fromage," Tobias and Franklyn, Will's psychological state, his relationships with Alana and Hannibal, and the fight scene between Tobias and Hannibal
  • How does one play a human cello?
  • We gush about the fight scene, because holy crap, was it awesome
  • Ian expresses his theories about whether or not Will and Alana's kiss was real or a creation of Will's worsening mental state. In short: ...es posible?
  • At the end of the episode, Ian also goes into a little more detail about The Monkey World and how he sees it relating to Hannibal
  • A few more details are given on the Most Insane Crackfic Crossover Contest (or MI3C). And by a few, I mean one. We have a deadline: end of Hannibal season 1. More details to come.
ADDENDUM:
  • SUCKERPUNCH. That is the word I was floundering for at the beginning of the podcast, in reference to the episode's shortened run time making it have that much more of an intense impact.
Music/Sounds:
  • Opening sound clip from Dexter's Laboratory 1x09 "The Big Cheese"
  • Intro music: "Lotion" - Greenskeepers | YouTube | iTunes |
  • Outro music: "Techno Syndrome (Mortal Kombat)" - the Immortals (written by Oliver Adams) | YouTube | iTunes |

003: Hannibal 1x07 "Sorbet" - The Most Insane Crackfic Crossover

SPOILERS UP TO (and including) HANNIBAL 1x07 (as well as Red Dragon/Silence of the Lambs/Hannibal)

In this episode:
  • We have a Tumblr! Follow, reblog, and ask us things!
  • Discussion of Hannibal 1x07 "Sorbet," the introduction of Gillian Anderson's character Dr. Bedelia Du Marier, dream logic, and Hannibal's relationships with other people
  • We recorded this a little later at night than usual, so we get a little...rambly
  • NBC Hannibal Tumblr
  • Blood Wedding, a 1933 Spanish play that, in the performance Fio and I saw, had very dreamlike qualities
  • Fan challenge: Write/draw the Insane Crackfic Crossover! (#insane hannibal crackfic crossover) Characters include Hannibal, Will, Morpheus, Dana Scully, Zoe Washburne, the Doctor, and Jareth the Goblin King. Bonus points for Eddie Izzard.
  • Prizes? Um...our undying admiration?
  • We actually haven't agreed on making this a fan challenge. Fio, don't be mad. PLEASE.
ADDENDUM:
  • I completely butchered the rattling off of all the ways to communicate with us at the end of the episode. If you're reading this on the blog, you know that the ways to contact us are in the sidebar. If not, go to amatteroftastepodcast.blogspot.com and click on whatever way through which you want to contact us.
  • There's a section of this podcast that I actually cut, mostly because it was a story that I rambled through and didn't really do justice. I'll leave a link here and hopefully we'll discuss it in a later episode, but in short: Watercolor painter Michael Osterweil has a series of paintings called "The Monkey World" which can be found here. At the top of the page is a short paragraph describing the driving perspective behind the series. To me, the way he sees the general human populace in this series is similar to the way Hannibal views the general human populace (albeit without cannibalistic results). Again, we plan on digging deeper into this in a later episode, but since it relates directly to our discussion of the way Hannibal views the opera singer in this episode compared to how he views humans generally, we wanted to make sure we referenced it here.
Music/Sounds:
  • Opening soundbyte from the Witch Doctor's gag dialogue in Warcraft III

  • Outro: "Hotel California" - the Eagles | YouTube | iTunes |

002: Hannibal 1x06 "Entrée" - Watch Hannibal (Or We'll Come and Eat Your Body Parts)

SPOILERS UP TO (and including) HANNIBAL 1x06 (as well as plot details from Red Dragon/Silence of the Lambs)

In this episode:
ADDENDUM:
  • Several times in the episode we talk about the scene where "Hannibal kills Miriam." While we do make mention at the end of the podcast that we don't actually know if Hannibal killed her there--in fact, he couldn't have, since he was able to get the recording of her that he plays for Crawford--we don't actually clarify that we understand that until the end of the episode, so in case you start yelling at us while listening, I'm telling you here. Admit it. You've yelled at a podcast before. I mean, I have. That's normal. Right? ...Right?
  • We talk about Fio liveblogging the episode, when technically it should probably be livetweeting... I just wanted to make sure no one came here to the blog expecting to see his running commentary.

001: Hannibal 1x05 "Coquilles" - We're Okay With Cannibalism

(Screencap from http://screencapped.net/tv/hannibal/displayimage.php?pos=-7570)

EXPLICIT: We curse sometimes. Not excessively, but yeah, there that is.

SPOILERS FOR HANNIBAL 1x01 - 1x05 (also includes minor Manhunter/Red Dragon spoilers)

In this episode:
  • It's our first! W00T.
  • Discussion of Hannibal 1x05 "Coquilles," the series thus far, and overarching themes
  • Ghost Rider jokes are mentioned once, then never again
  • Ian struggles to word his thoughts right (but what's new?)
  • Fio's heart flutters momentarily for Hannibal
  • A train passes in the background
  • Horrible food puns are made
  • EDIT: Also, our discussion of the difference in colors in Bella/Hannibal vs Hannibal/Will scenes is coming slightly out of our asses. Rewatching "Coquilles" there's a giant goddamn saturated red wall looming over Bella in all of the scenes she has in Hannibal's office. The palette may be a little more muted, but not as much as we seemed to think when recording the episode. The funny things our minds are capable of, eh?
CORRECTIONS:
  • The Doctor Who episode Fio mentions (featuring an empath) is titled "Hide," not "Hurt."
