074: Hannibal 3x03 "Secondo" - Hannibal, Buttcracks, and You

SPOILERS UP TO (and including) HANNIBAL 3x03, as well as MAJOR SPOILERS for the novels/movies Hannibal and Hannibal Rising.

In this episode:
  • Vic joins us while Fio tries to get his Internet back up and running.
  • In case you missed it: My thoughts on Primavera, let me show you them.
  • TERRIBLE NEWS: Hannibal has been canceled. D: D: D:
    • BUT: There's a good chance it'll be picked up by someone else! Hopefully. Please.
  • Discussion of Hannibal 3x03 "Secondo," including the reinvention of the Mischa backstory, Hannibal and Bedelia's relationship, the connection between Will and Chiyo, Pazzi and Jack, and where this leg (pardon the terminology, Dr. Gideon) of the season may be going
  • There is a question of how far we should push things on Hannibal before it moves into the territory of bad taste.
  • Familiarity between the feelings at the beginning of S2 and the beginning of S3
  • Snails, man. Fuggin snails.
  • The similarity between a lot of the somewhat nonsensical establishing shots in S3 and the ones from Twin Peaks
  • Ian has theories about how the backstory may play out. No wAIT COME BACK
  • Cleo's Antipasto and Mukozuke recaps
THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:
  • I have original thoughts. Really.
  • Highlights from Fio's notes:
    • Vic? Weird? Noooooooooooooooo
    • I dunno if I would call that guy’s comment rude, not that I’ve been in that situation before, but when someone makes a comment like Bedelia did I think asking ‘Is this that kind of party?’ is a fair fucking question, man. Note from Ian: Yeah, Hannibal seemed pretty delighted by the question. It's pretty clear that Hannibal kills Dimmond because he's a liability (and to teach Bedelia a lesson, as it were), not necessarily because of any action that could be construed as "rude."
    • Vic is an Avid Fan, hahaha
    • Ian says “we’re running short on time” with half of the episode left, everyone drink
    • Once is all you really ever need to see Hannibal Rising
    • Chiyo isn’t in Hannibal Rising (film), she’s the handmaiden of Lady Murasaki

073: Hannibal 3x01 "Antipasto" - Implied Applause (in a Can!)

SPOILERS UP TO (and including) HANNIBAL 3x01, as well as minor spoilers for the novel Hannibal.

In this episode:
  • Discussion of Hannibal 3x01 "Antipasto," including the cinematography, the soundtrack, Hannibal and Bedelia's relationship, the elements lovingly preserved from the novel Hannibal, and how this premiere compares to previous seasons. Also, OYSTERS AAAAAHHHHH.
  • Seriously, the color composition, the 80s synth, everything about this episode was just damn gorgeous.
  • No redeeming figures present in the episode. Bedelia is close, but even then she’s morally compromised by her collusion with Hannibal, even if it is in the best interests of her own health.
  • Bedelia is linked to water thematically, or at least she will be over the course of the first part of the season.
  • Food is part of Hannibal’s DNA, for better or worse. Mostly better. Like 90% better.
  • The unrestrained theatricality of Hannibal and the unrestrained theatricality of Hannibal
  • The Wolfman > Dracula > Frankenstein cycle of the seasons thus far
  • The feeling of community that comes with live tweeting a show as emotionally upsetting as Hannibal
THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:
  • We didn't really spend any time discussing the flashbacks this episode. Our apologies.
  • Notes from Fio:
    • Kafkaesque is the word I was looking for when trying to describe [Cube]. Of all the times I’ve seen that descriptor used in the entirely wrong way, this is the one time it applies and I fucking didn’t say it.
    • We should really have done a closer examination of the two scenes where Bedelia is in the wine shop. By the structure of using those two scenes alone it was obviously supposed to draw more attention to her mental state and her perspective on her situation by contrasting the endings of the two scenes.
    • Regarding film terms: “That was a cinematic trick adapted for print. Death wasn’t talking to the princess. He was actually in his study, talking to Mort. But it was quite effective, wasn’t it? It’s probably called a fast dissolve, or a crosscut/zoom. Or something. An industry where the senior technician is called a Best Boy might call it anything.” I don’t know if we’ve discussed that Sir Pterry quote on the podcast before, but it’s one of my favs
    • God even I hate myself for using the word zeitgeist there.
    • Campy or cartoonish? From the show that brought us the Bee people and Perhorseling? Pshaw.
    • Take a shot every time Ian says “This friggin show.” It’s usually once or twice an episode, so this should actually be alright. (Note from Ian: Unless you include whenever I tag a post on our Tumblr with it. Then you'll be dead before the turn of the next scroll.)
    • Deepcut Demonnames is going to be the title of my first EP
    • One of the things that I forgot to mention but I think could be really cool. I read an interview that implied that we wouldn’t really see Hannibal in his memory palace too much this season, but rather we’d see Will trying to build Hannibal’s memory palace as he chases him down.

072: A Foretaste of Hannibal Season 3

SPOILERS FOR HANNIBAL SEASONS 1 & 2 (as well as promotional materials for Season 3)

In this episode:
  • We're back! Everything is better!
  • Except for Bedelia. Everything is not going to be better for her.
  • We discuss what's to come in Hannibal Season 3, including Hannibal and Bedelia in Europe, the Red Dragon storyline, and the fates of various characters.
  • Hannibal and body horror and you
  • Freddie Lounds (what fourth wall?) interviewed Bryan Fuller about the upcoming season!
  • The amazing comments from NBC's Standards and Practices concerning an upcoming sex scene
  • Characters and actors coming in this season: Richard Armitage as Francis Dolarhyde, Rutina Wesley as Reba McClane, and Nina Arianda as Molly Graham
  • ALSO: Ian released an EP of songs inspired by some of the shows discussed here on the podcast, including Hannibal and Constantine! Check it out!
THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:
  • Cleo has, in fact, been Storfying new promo materials and such. Here's what she collected for May.
  • Notes from Fio:
    • The notion of a show creatively doing whatever the hell they feel like would give us pause on another series but in Hannibal’s case it makes us excited which has nothing to do with the fact that we’re fanboys waaaaaaaaay too close to offer objective criticism of the show at all. (To clarify, I think we offer some pretty great crit on the show, but it is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar afield from objective.)
    • We’re starting BowieTruther Watch as soon as the show begins
    • A Matter of Scheduling is going to be our much less popular pre-show podcast.
      • I’m kidding of course, we can barely get this one out on time, how the hell would we swing a pre-podcast podcast.
    • As far as the differences between the back tattoos go, we should also mention that while the Fiennes Dolarhyde did have horns, the emphasis was on the wings, whereas the Armitage Dolarhyde seems to be using the horns in particular to emphasize his shoulderblades.
    • A Matter of Taste Advice: You should always be wary of people trying to get you to eat a lot of oysters, both Game of Thrones and Hannibal are now warning us of this.
    • I know you probably want to claim it, but I’m calling dibs on The Darkened Sideboob as my spinoff podcast. (Note from Ian: Keep an eye out for my upcoming essay, Claiming the Darkened Sideboob, a meditation on NBC's standards and practices)
    • We should actually think about the time travel mechanics work in Outlander and whether or not Claire telling this dude the date of his death will change history and cause it not to happen.
