SPOILERS FOR HALLOWEEN (1978) & HALLOWEEN (2018)

In this episode:

Halloween is one of those rare examples where the first real demonstrable example of a genre also codifies it.

Halloween and John Carpenter have the audacity to just have Michael Myers just standing there in the middle of the day.

The parallels this film draws between Laurie and Michael are really intriguing.

The new Halloween strikes an interesting balance, as one can’t just pretend that 40 years of movies don’t exist.

This is the Song Exploder episode that Ian is talking about. http://songexploder.net/halloween

We have a pretty lean season for horror this year.*

This flick has a lot of complicated, complex thoughts on the notion of legacy.

Halloween 2k18 strikes a nice balance in paying homage to the original without clinging to it too tightly.

The interplay and complexities of the generational relationships in this flick are pretty interesting to examine.

We have a brief discussion about what we’re hoping for out of these sequels.

The sense of normalcy and realism is key to what makes the Halloween films work.

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

Managed to get this one out on Halloween! Just in time for everyone to be out at Halloween parties and not have any time to listen to it, natch.

*Somehow The Lighthouse was not on either of our radars when we had this discussion.

SPOILERS for everything IT (book, miniseries, movies, etc.)

In this episode:

TW: A Lot of Suicide Talk (Comes up briefly at 54:30, then we tangent a bit and get back to it from 1:10:00 - 1:17:20)

Man we take a while to get back into a Matter of Taste.

Also FUCK this episode is 101, we couldn’t have scripted that absence.

Also FUCK our 100th episode was Fire Walk With Me? Hella.

Hey, only a couple minutes in we announce that our discussion will involve SPOILERS for a story released 33 years ago, then again then again like 29 years ago, then again like 2 years ago, and then again like early September.

Ian brings up how important the visual consistency and coherence is to selling the emotional resonance of the story

Oh boy, let’s talk about the Ritual of Chud

I talk a lot about the way that Pennywise’s existence has bled into the town of Derry, but I want to emphasize that I don’t think hatred, racism and homophobia are supernatural forces, I understand that the existence of Pennywise in this small-not-small, prosperous-not-prosperous small town is a metaphor

Let’s talk about Pennywise and IT and how the different interpretations reflect the priorities of the flicks versus the movies.

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM

They’re apparently considering a prequel which is fuckin wild.

I have an idea for the best version of these movies, but I don’t know how you cut it together with all they’ve done with Native American stereotypes and throwing Mike under the bus

So the good news is that we’ve been out so long that there’s a ton to cover. Stay tuned for updates!

Music:

Intro: "Full Moon Fever" - Ramshki Alley | STAY TUNED FOR UPDATES |

SPOILERS FOR TWIN PEAKS SEASONS 1 & 2 and TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME (1992), including THE MISSING PIECES (deleted/extended scenes from the film).

In this episode:

IMPORTANT NOTE: This episode was recorded BEFORE Twin Peaks: The Return began airing, so you won't hear us discussing anything from the new series (besides the casting news released a while ago)--for better or for worse.

We return to the world of Twin Peaks for our 100th episode! Listen as we discuss the 1992 prequel movie Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, and all the weirdness it has to offer.

The weirdness is pretty dense in Fire Walk With Me, giving you a much more concentrated dose of what you get throughout the series.

Ian gets a bit into the expanded content and additional material on the Blu-ray Entire Mystery box set.

We dance around a bit talking about the kind of ineffable, cosmic horror parts of Twin Peaks.

Twin Peaks is very likely a weirdness magnet in the same storied company as Derry, Maine and Gravity Falls, Oregon

The show/film is incredibly esoteric in the way in attempts to communicate meaning and does little to alleviate that.

Fire Walk With Me doesn’t quite function as a single unit, it needs to come after the series to stand on its own.

We don’t always understand where Lynch is going with things, but we trust him to do it well.

We talk a little bit about shades of interpretation and the how the number of people involved in a film production can change the reading of a character.

Ian wants it to be known that he’s not an expert in Zen Buddhism

Sheryl Lee and Ray Wise are amazing together.

Twin Peaks is effective because it’s so focused. We want to learn more but learning more about that world would dilute the focus.

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

Apologies for the lateness of this episode once again. I (Ian) just got a new job, so editing fell to the wayside for a bit.

I also have watched the first four episodes of the new series, and holy crap, is it David Lynch-y.

As we mentioned on the episode: THIS IS NOT THE END! We already have ideas for upcoming episodes. Keep an eye out for them!

SPOILERS FOR RESIDENT EVIL 7 & 4.

In this episode:

We're back this month to discuss Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Fio's a long-time RE fan, and Ian got to play both the demo and the game on PSVR, so there's quite some ground that gets covered.

It’s good having someone doing something in the style of P.T. since Konami has no interest in games anymore, apparently.

While there are definitely complaints to be made about some samey-ness in the monster design, the Baker villains were all very well crafted and they exude character in their appearances.

The setpieces in this game are really strong, especially the house. As mentioned the Bakers are also really strong/well-realized monsters and characters. The story, to be charitable, is not so much.

In the opening act of the game, uh, you get fucked up bad. You get fucked up real bad.

This game is just really well paced and plotted and all around a solid outing, which is definitely refreshing after the mess that was Resi 6.

We talk briefly about competing philosophies in terms of how developed your main characters should be in games.

Ian found a cool couple of Behind the Scenes featurettes on YouTube (SPOILERS):

Part One: Beginning Hours

Part Two: Welcome to the Family

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

Next is our 100th episode! Also...just about...our <strike>five</strike> four year anniversary? Daaaaaaamn.

Also, the first teaser for the new adaptation of Stephen King's It was just released, and we're both excited.

SPOILERS FOR YOU'RE NEXT (2011), THE GUEST (2014), AND BLAIR WITCH (2016).

In this episode:

WE'RE ALIIIIIIIIIIVE! And back to discuss three movies from director Adam Wingard: You're Next (2011), The Guest (2014), and Blair Witch (2016).

You're Next (2011)

The home invasion genre and the ways it clashes with the usual American horror flick philosophy

We discuss the relative groundedness of You’re Next. It’s probably up to your own threshold of groundedness interpretation.

I (Fio) start off talking about Home Invasion flicks having a kinship with Japanese horror and then take for-goddamn-ever to get back around to what I mean.

Man, how good was 10 Cloverfield Lane, though?

The Guest (2014)

Thanks to podcast listener Kate for recommending this movie to us in the first place!

We start tackling The Guest and the Politics of Handsomeness.

Also, Ian desperately hopes this was a werewolf film.

Again, we get into a discussion of the relative groundedness of the film and how many steps we are away from our own universe in this film.

Blair Witch (2016)

Everyone in the Blair Witch movies is in film school. Just make peace with this from the get-go.

We compare the slow-burn, unscripted nature of the original Blair Witch to the slicker, more “hollywood” Blair Witch 3.

We get our Doug Jones jokes out, but rest assured they come from a place of love.

Ian talks about Resident Evil 7 for a few minutes while Fio desperately tries not to die.

Also: listen to the end of the podcast for "Trespasser," a song from Ian's recently released solo album, Stepping Stones!

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

Apologies for the long, unannounced hiatus. We plan on being back on a monthly basis for the foreseeable future.

We're approaching our 100th episode! Let us know if there's anything in particular you'd like to see us do for it.

From Fio:

My sneezing and sniffling is goddamn disgusting. Our hideous meat bodies are truly a blight on this planet.

Nothing to do with the podcast, but sniffling while I’m listening to myself sniffle on the recording and having them line up is a really bizarre experience.

SPOILERS FOR STRANGER THINGS SEASON 1.

In this episode:

We discuss the first season of Netflix's Stranger Things, including the casting, the writing, the influences, and holy crap this show is so much fun to talk about.

We open with our first impressions of Stranger Things and overall thoughts on the series.

We spend a good bit talking about and speculating about Season 2 just in time for io9 to publish an article telling people to stop talking about Season 2 lest they ruin it, so that’s killer timing.

We start talking about DnD, which could have really dominated the podcast but thankfully we winged away from it really quick.

Another aside about Haven, but only to illustrate how well Stranger Things handles the characters’ handles on its various supernatural elements.

We talk about the different stories being told in Stranger Things and the successes and pitfalls of that particular approach.

The show never loses sight of its humanity, which is definitely one of its strengths.

Next month: WITCHES, including (finally) our thoughts on The Witch (2016).

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

From Fio: I misspoke when I said that the party in The Mummy is composed of a Ranger, Wizard, Paladin, and Bard, it’s clearly a Ranger, Wizard, Fighter, and Bard, Brendan Frasier doesn’t multiclass until the sequel.

SPOILERS FOR ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.

In this episode:

At long last, our discussion of the 1975 cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show, including Tim Curry, the stellar soundtrack, the obtuse plot, and its place as a cultural phenomenon.

This is take two of this episode, so much like with our Sweeney episode, we try to hit on points we did the first time we recorded while keeping the conversation alive and organic. To...mixed results.

Seriously, though, the soundtrack kicks ass, even if Ian's a little perplexed at how all of these songs came together.

We talk about how we first saw Rocky Horror. Ian watched it with his Dad, which probably wasn’t weird at all, and then ended up seeing a shadowcast performance at college. Fio’s girlfriend made him go see it in high school.

The production values, sets, casting, etc. of this film are pretty great, but watching it on its own, you don’t really get the full experience.

We talk about other horror musicals we haven’t discussed during this series, putting the spotlight on The Devil’s Carnival and Jasper in Deadland.

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

Again, apologies for the lateness of the episode and a potentially less-than-comprehensive discussion, due to this being a re-record. Technology was working against us for this one.

From Fio: My bad, Superman doesn’t reprogram the population of Transilvane by playing westerns, he specifically does it by playing them Oklahoma! So this fits into our musical theme!

Here's a link to the Decemberists/Silent Hill song parody Ian wrote (MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SILENT HILL 2): "James Hymn"

SPOILERS FOR SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET.

In this episode:

Apologies to Mr. Sondheim for the opening. :P

We discuss Sondheim's masterpiece horror musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, including the 2007 movie adaptation, the original Broadway production, and the 2005 Broadway revival.

How does the 2007 movie fare as an adaptation?

The genre discussion comes up again.

Craft & theory talk! Overtures, the Ballad, and the opening “number(s)” of a musical, and how they introduce the audience to world, language, form, etc. of the musical

Sondheim teaches "My Friends"

Ian loves the 2005 Broadway revival. Let him show you his thoughts on it.

The narrative layers in the revival

Denouements: where have they gone?

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

Apologies for the lateness. Life happens.

Also apologies for all the weird car noises in the background; that’s probably on me. – Ian

I think what I was trying to say when talking about Anthony is that even with all the circumstances surrounding his and Johanna’s romance, you’re still rooting for them, and it’s partially because of the circumstances. Them running off together isn’t the perfect solution, but it’s certainly better than her staying with the Judge.

I also think that a lot of the stuff I say is in the liner notes of the 2005 revival may have actually been in articles I read at the time the show was on Broadway.

“Singing that violin line”? Playing. That’s what I meant.

UPDATE 7/25: Linked the "Sondheim teaches..." video above. Forgive me for forgetting. (...Sweeney pun?)

Wait...wasn't there a scene like this in Little Shop?

SPOILERS FOR REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA.

In this episode:

The second installment of our Summer Musical Series!

We discuss the 2008 adaptation of Repo! The Genetic Opera, including the cast, the plot, the music, and how it all churns into something that's both a mess and yet undeniably something we enjoy the hell out of.

This is a flawed film, but there’s a lot to love in here.

Comparing the needs of musical theater to the needs of film in terms of pacing and shit.

The third act is really where the seams begin to show in this flick.

This film is unabashedly for itself, which is definitely something to be respected.

Next time: Evil Dead: The Musical!

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

The Devil’s Carnival is unfortunately not on Netflix.

From Fio: Referring to something like Linkin Park imbuing in you a “deep vein of metal” might get some people calling us out on our metal credentials, haha. ...That's fair. Direct any complaints directly to me. - Ian

Luigi's line is actually "I will shoot you in the FACE!" My mistake.

More from Fio:

Would you say that they needed to explain the use of Zydrate in a way that’s quick, and clean, and pure? Booooo. - Ian

Going back to talking about Infected, some of the lines in that are pretty awesome. Especially “Do you hear me, mother? Thanks for the disease.” I just really fucking love that line, hahaha.

“Daddy’s girl’s a fucking monster” is also an amazing line, by the by.

SPOILERS FOR LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS & THE HUNGER GAMES.

In this episode:

The first episode in our Summer Musical Series!

We discuss the classic Alan Menken/Howard Ashman musical Little Shop of Horrors and its movie adaptation, including the original black-and-white movie, the stage musical, and the many strong points and flaws of the 1986 Frank Oz movie.

We get a bit into the broad tonal inconsistency that shows up in the film.

We talk a bit about the prevalence of improvisation, specifically in the comedy genre, and the sort of slapdash energy that the movie has.

Little Shop of Horrors as an oddly indelible part of the cultural landscape

The dutch angles and other interesting film choices in the case of Little Shop

Also the unique monster design of Audrey II, something you don’t see a lot of in horror films, though that could just be due to a lack of really cool plant monsters.

The danger of breaking the dream is much greater in the world of musicals than it is in other narratives.

The interesting stylistic choice of putting the general tone of the lyrics at odds with more traditional 50s musical styles.

Our actually interesting and worthwhile discussion of story vs presentation

That wasn’t sarcasm, by the way, I actually really dig this conversation. - Fio

Here's our official schedule for the Summer Musical Series:

Little Shop of Horrors: June 9th

Repo! The Genetic Opera: June 23rd

Evil Dead: The Musical: July 7th

Sweeney Todd: July 21st

Rocky Horror Picture Show: August 4th

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

We initially had some issues getting the episode uploaded, so keep an eye on our social media (Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook) for podcast updates in case there's a delay or rescheduling.

Also, Ian's going to try to livetweet his rewatches of each musical movie, so keep an eye on those same places and his personal twitter (@idoherty451) to find out when that will be!

I'm just realizing that maybe the reason I (Ian) like "Suppertime" so much is because it sounds particularly Pink Floyd-y.

Notes from Fio:

The use of the doo-wop singers as a greek chorus is an interesting choice

Man, weird last-minute Hunger Games aside out of nowhere

SPOILERS FOR PENNY DREADFUL SEASONS 1 & 2 (and minor spoilers for Season 3).

In this episode:

In anticipation of the new season, we discuss the first two seasons of Showtime's Gothic horror series Penny Dreadful, including the overall style of the show, the characters, the cast, and yes, werewolves, potentially of the sexy variety.

We (read: Ian) can't escape talking about this show without comparing it to a variety of other media, including NBC's Dracula, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The Walking Dead, and yes, Hannibal, among others.

How unrelenting bleakness can become wearying

I think we should also clarify that this isn’t a blanket critique of all bleak narratives. I think we’re just inundated with them at the moment. There’s also a very troubling association in pop culture at the moment of bleakness with maturity, as though any story without a bleak philosophy is somehow childish, which I think is more what we’re criticizing here.

The snails return. The Snailening

Novel class returns. The Novelening. The Robertsoning.

We start digging into the way narratives that are attempting to tell different types of stories can show us two wildly different facets of a character with each interpretation being an equally valid expression of the character.

WEREWOLVES WEREWOLVES WEREWOLVES.

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

Just as an aside: We're approaching our 100th episode! We have ideas planned out for the next few episodes, but is there anything in particular you'd want to see/hear us do for the 100th episode? Let us know in the comments below or through one of our various forms of contact on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook

Holy crap, we didn't even talk about how much I (Ian) love the music on this show. In particular: Dido's Lament ("When I am laid in earth") from Dido and Aeneas is my favorite aria I learned about in college, and THEY USED IT.

Highlights from Fio's notes:

I’m honestly curious how many times we reference Hannibal in episodes that are, like, explicitly not about Hannibal.

In the Era of Dystopian Future Literature and Apocalyptic Stuff should be a book of essays.

“I wouldn’t advise them,” so fucking magnanimous, Fio, of course the Penny Dreadful writing staff listens to this podcast.

At this point in the podcast I go silent because I’m looking up 40 Days and 40 Nights because I can’t remember if Shannyn Sossamon is in it or not. She is, by the way.

“I’m positive, actually” *proceeds to be wrong* “Fuck. Fuck me.”

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

We recorded this on the 12th, so there are plenty of things that have been announced since then that we didn't cover on this episode. Apologies for the delay.

Rose Byrne played the mother in Insidious, not Vera Farmiga. Again--these movies.

Although--let us apologize for dropping some serious shade on Insidious and The Conjuring during this cast.

From Fio: It’s not that I can’t tell Insidious and The Conjuring apart when watching them, it’s that when I think about them, I can’t remember which scenes are part of which movie.

Corroborative evidence: This is the Insidious scene I (Ian) was talking about, but boy, did I recall it wrong.

Skype did actually record the beginning of the podcast, despite my belief that it hadn't, so that's what you're hearing in the outtakes at the end.

More from Fio:

How did I not mention 1989 classic Warlock when we were talking about witch movies?

I’m going to apologize to our listeners for my lack of Phantasm expertise, but to be fair you kinda put me on the spot there, Ian. Hahaha.

Can we get back to releasing cool horror flicks around all hallows? That would be nice.

Natalie Dormer also plays her sister in that flick (The Forest), and from that sounds of it that’s the reason she took the job. Interviews make it sound like she was just checking something off a list where she plays against herself.

Sam Neill totally plays Damien in the 3rd Omen movie.

We give our thoughts on Guillermo del Toro's Gothic masterpiece, Crimson Peak!

...after everyone else has already done so.

The confusion over various misdirects in the film re: whether the Sharpes were supernatural beings or not

How many Guillermo del Toro mainstays can we spot?

Poor adaptations and their difficulty making the boring milquetoast male lead interesting

Highlights from Fio's timestamps:

24:08 - “Like it seems like” real fuckin eloquent, Fio

29:36 - My “hrrrII hab no idea” is bullseye Hiddleston. Just sayin

34:06 - “I can’t remember the name of the movie…” Groundhog Day? Ian from the future: Figured it out. It was Dark Floors. Hit a lot of points for me aesthetically, but didn't quite bring it together in a satisfying way.

50:46 - I meant to say red blazer here, not red sportscoat, but whatevs. Also, I know Harker’s job involved real estate in some way, and he was helping arrange Dracula’s purchase of some land in London and stuff, but I don’t remember what his exact function in the process was.

I dunno, by the time I got to that Chastain line with “I’m not going to stop until I kill you or you kill me” I was firmly in the camp that there’s nothing supernatural about the Sharpes

SPOILERS FOR ALL THREE SEASONS OF HANNIBAL, and potential spoilers for where they plan(ned) to take the series next.

In this episode:

Cleolinda Jones joins us once again! We discuss the Hannibal panels at Dragon Con 2015 and the way the Hannibal TV series wrapped up.

Cleo's Dragon Con experience was pretty awesome.

Our discussion of Dragon Con mixes with our discussion of the Hannibal Finale.

We get very deeply into discussions of the placement of Bedelia’s final scene, joking ways that Hannibal and Will could have survived, and the ramifications of the finale on all of Will’s emotional connections were the show to continue and he actually run off to Argentina with Hannibal.

At 1:25:52, we begin our discussion about Hannibal as a show in a broader context, including how Bryan Fuller handled the show and its community, the contrast between the first and second halves of Season 3 (and the reasons thereof), and how we feel about the show as a whole.

SPOILERS UP TO (and including) THE HANNIBAL SEASON 3 FINALE, as well as for the novels and movies Manhunter, Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal.

In this episode:

Alright, wipe away your tears, time to start talkin’ bout, talkin’ bout the Hannibal finale

Vic joins us once again to discuss Hannibal 3x13 "The Wrath of the Lamb," including everything, and all of it happening so very, very much.

Running to the end of this season, we basically have a full exploration of Will’s character when it comes to the source material.

The article Fio references: Tracking Hannibal Lecter, from Manhunter to Red Dragon

Book purist reactions and the deviations from the source material that have been inherent in Fuller’s “remixing” strategy since the beginning.

Comparing and contrasting the various Dolarhyde stories, especially in reference to Reba’s story’s conclusion.

The problem of Jack becoming more of a side character this season as opposed to his more central role in previous seasons.

In her Aperitivo recap, Cleo actually gets deeper into the differing emotional ramifications of the show’s relationship between Hannibal and Crawford and the Book/Movie’s which we touch on only briefly here, but it’s good to mention.

Digesting the reaction to the Hannibal Finale (see what I did there?)

Is this really as close as we’re going to get to Hannigram Confirmed?

Stay tuned in a couple of weeks for our series retrospective episode with Cleolinda Jones!

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

I got nothin', so here are the highlights from Fio's timestamps:

Hashtags are just stupid and funny. I don’t know why, but they are.

I don’t agree with Vic’s reading of Red Dragon / Silence of the Lambs / Hannibal in regards to Will Graham vs Clarice, but I think we got away from it before I could interject. In Red Dragon, Hannibal completely fucking destroys Will so bad he becomes nothing more than a footnote in someone else’s narrative by the end of it, but in Hannibal he acknowledges that he can’t even predict how what he did would change Clarice, so I think my reading of the books is kind of the opposite of what he was proposing.

Yes you do want to say “fall under Hannibal’s spell” admit it. ADMIT IT IAN

Will absolutely will not go to jail after the jailbreak because Murder Wizardry > Real world experience in this show. Every damn time.

In this episode:

CHILTON'S LIPS FOR THE LOVE OF THE NINE BLOODPISSING HELLS

So, that happened.

Chilton has layers in this adaptation. Get out your Shrek jokes now.

All the love to Raul Esparza

Nah, but for real, we spend a lot of time talking about the Dolarhyde/Chilton scene so... you know... strap in for that.

Bedelia has moved into a very sinister, alien place in the Hannibal mythos

Also, I didn't think we were gonna compare Bedelia to Scully at all, but whatever, here we are, everything's Hannibal and everything Hurts.

We also talk about the origins of the Bedelia character as we know her.

Will's character progression and how his somewhat-regression-y-motions during this episode are super really important.

How certain are we that Will's responsible for Chilton's predicament and how conscious was he about this happening?

The fact that Armitage has managed to make his performance so distinct from Fiennes while walking a lot of the same ground is frankly astonishing.

Our (super-vague, unsatisfying) predictions for the way the finale is going to shake out.

How exactly do you read the last scene between Dolarhyde and Reba?

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

We're running lean this week this folks, so no real notes from timestamps to speak of, which is a shame, we know you love our sloppy excuse for wit.

Lots of thanks to @princess_starr for reminding us how cruel Bryan Fuller can be and to @munin_and_hugin for pointing out the staples (to me at least).

Ian delivers "I was lying... on yOUR BEHALF!" really well, if anybody's looking to audition voice actors, give him a ring.

Ian mentions Bedelia talking about being Hannibal's bride, but I'm pretty sure she's making a Bluebeard reference in that scene.

That's...not a GOOD sound...

SPOILERS UP TO (and including) HANNIBAL 3x11

In this episode:

Discussion of Hannibal 3x11 "...And the Beast from the Sea," including the adaptation and departure from book material, Richard Armitage and Mads Mikkelsen's performances, Nina Arianda as Molly, and OMGWTFCINEMATOGRAPHY.

Dolarhyde trying to pass on the dragon to a new host or to sate it with Will’s family

Hannibal has in fact always told the truth, in his own way.

Hannibal - Textbook Egotist

The measured conversation between Will and his step-son

"Wolves in the Heart" and its connection to the duality of Dolarhyde and the Dragon

What’s really well done about the home invasion scene is that it allows Molly and Walter to escape without making Dolarhyde do something stupid. They earn their exit.

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

Again, apologies for the delay. This week and next week have been/will be particularly busy for me, so there may be some shuffling again. After next week, though, things lighten up, so we'll definitely be back on schedule for the finale, if not for next week. Hopefully.

Huh--I think I was looking for the word "fable" when talking about that Cherokee story, but the site I linked to (which I just found while Googling now) calls it a parable as well.

So this story is not actually Native American in origin, it seems to originate from a 1978 book "The Holy Spirit" by Christian Evangelist Billy Graham. Thanks to @munin_and_hugin on Twitter for providing the source.

SPOILERS UP TO (and including) HANNIBAL 3x10, as well as spoilers for the Red Dragon novel/movies.

In this episode:

Discussion of Hannibal 3x10 "...And the Woman Clothed in the Sun," including Hannibal's changing role, Dolarhyde and Reba's relationship, Will and Bedelia's relationship, and where the season may take us next.

How many religious figures has Hannibal been compared to on this show? Can we take some bets on who’s going to be next? (Fio's money’s on Ammit)

We appreciate the amount of effort the scriptwriters are making to get these actors all into the same room for certain scenes.

The echoes of the Sutcliffe situation felt retroactively in our glimpse at Bedelia’s encounter with her “violent” patient

The beastial side of humanity and different beastial facets of nature are a running theme in this episode, which is an area we haven’t really explored yet.

We also don’t have the entire story behind the Bedelia/Neil story yet, and since we’ve got 3 more episodes with Gillian Anderson this season, there’s a good possibility we’ll see something more of this before the season is out.*

The rehearsals we’ve had for the Red Dragon story over the past couple of seasons

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

From Ian: Looking back at this scene in particular, I realized we never really touched on the fact that Neil's description of Lecter's treatment seems to imply that Hannibal is essentially programming him (psychic driving, anyone?) to involuntarily start swallowing his own tongue when exposed to certain stressors. The way I was talking about it, I was almost believing it to be a tick that developed naturally from Neil himself somehow, brought to light by Lecter's unorthodox treatment (just goes to show how insidious Hannibal can be, even toward the audience). I think that is an important distinction to make when discussing this scene, especially if when Neil starts talking about the tongue-swallowing to Bedelia, it's her first time hearing about it. At that point she may still be operating in a worldview where she hears that and is like, "Wow, this guy really is losing it if he thinks he can swallow his tongue," rather than "That certainly sounds like something Hannibal could make someone do." The big question that needs to be answered is, how close is Bedelia to Hannibal when he refers Neil to her? How much does she know of his darker side at that point in time?

Highlights from Fio's notes:

The Tyger is generally interpreted as highlighting a duality of aesthetic beauty and primal ferocity, so I’m not 100% off base in my interpretation, but I am pretty grade school about it on the podcast

When I was talking out “explicit” I was talking about Reba’s comments on other people’s view of Dolarhyde being positive, but it seems like you thought I was talking about the sex scene, so I’m going to leave any freudian judgements up in the air here, haha. Ian from the future: Specifically, the thing that made me go "Oh, this is something that's happening on network television, ok" was Reba going down on Dolarhyde in the living room. ...I was going to say "We've had weirder sex scenes on this show than Reba and Dolarhyde's," but on second thought, I'm not so sure we have, what with the imagery of Reba LITERALLY as the woman in the Blake paintings.

Discussion of Hannibal 3x09 "...And the Woman Clothed with the Sun," including Hannibal and Will's new relationship, the reinterpretations of classic scenes, the introduction of Reba, and our concerns about Alana and Margot.

Let's have another horrible revelation about Abigail, shall we?

Alana is the only one standing between Hannibal and the outside world, which doesn’t seem like a great idea. There’s a reason the president and vp always fly on different planes, Alana.

Reidan brings up the term “scaroused” in reference to Armitage’s Dolarhyde

SPOILERS UP TO (and including) HANNIBAL 3x08, MANHUNTER, and RED DRAGON

In this episode:

After a 3 year time jump we catch up with all our old friends and learn just what they've been up to since the "capture" of Hannibal the Cannibal.

It's kind of like catching up with your friends after you come back to school from the summer but with more violent family annihilation and better food.

Alana is ruling the roost at the psychiatric ward and we're all kinds of psyched for that

Why is Hannibal afforded so many special privileges? We know he's not the type to be a super good boy.

Also, we're 90% sure he can escape whenever he damn well pleases and is only staying in one place so that Will knows where to find him.

Speaking of Will, we're happy to see him happy and Molly's actually nice so there's no chance this isn't going to be wall-to-wall awful as his entire nice life falls apart.

Hopefully we'll get to see some interactions that flesh out his relationship with his step-son before the dookie hits the fan, though

We're still curious as to what happened with Margot and Alana, as that might be a bright spot in what's sure to be a very freaking dark half a season.

Big picture questions about Will as the prototype for the disturbed genius profiler cliche and how that might play into the rest of his story this season.

Will hasn't been to see Hannibal in any of the 3 years of his captivity, dude can't be happy about that. At all.

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:
SPOILERS UP TO (and including) HANNIBAL 3x07

In this episode:

Back to our regular schedule! ...BUT AT WHAT COST? (None, really.)

Discussion of Hannibal 3x07 "Digestivo," including Margot's upsetting discovery and satisfying revenge, Alana's development as a character, Mason's awfulness, and of course, Will and Hannibal's relationship.

A brief discussion about the way Hannibal season finales tend to give shape and structure to the rest of the season retroactively

If this is what the MID-season finale was like, what the hell is the season finale going to be like?

The lighting in Hannibal deserves its own whole discussion

Killing Mason was a team effort. Hannibal, Alana, Margot, Will, and Chiyo are the Hannibal universe’s version of the Avengers

We all feel really weird that something good happened.

We award Hannibal a few points for facilitating the death of Mason, but he’ll probably lose them mad quick.

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:

Fio's Internet dropped him from the Skype conversation a few times, so while we were able to edit out continuity issues, there may be some weird syncing errors.

Apparently, the term is esotericism.

I just realized, if we ever had Tao Okamoto on, as well as Cleolinda, we would have a podcast consisting of Chiyo, Cleo and Fio. ...I'll let myself out.

Notes from Fio:

I spend a while ranting about Hannibal’s color design and getting nowhere. I think what I meant to say was just “It’s impressive that, even though I look back and see that the color design is pretty outrageous, watching it in the moment it never strikes me as something unnatural or emanating from some source that feels inorganic for the scene”

Chiyo’s story is done because Chiyo’s story is just beginning. She’s going to move away and settle down in a small fishing village in the company of a blind old cat named Archibald Friskers AND NOTHING BAD WILL EVER HAPPEN TO CHIYO EVER AGAIN SO FUCKING HELP ME GODS, BRYAN FULLER

That bit with Cordell’s face definitely reminded me of the way that security guard’s face slides off of Hopkins’ face in Silence
