074: Hannibal 3x03 "Secondo" - Hannibal, Buttcracks, and You

SPOILERS UP TO (and including) HANNIBAL 3x03, as well as MAJOR SPOILERS for the novels/movies Hannibal and Hannibal Rising.

In this episode:
  • Vic joins us while Fio tries to get his Internet back up and running.
  • In case you missed it: My thoughts on Primavera, let me show you them.
  • TERRIBLE NEWS: Hannibal has been canceled. D: D: D:
    • BUT: There's a good chance it'll be picked up by someone else! Hopefully. Please.
  • Discussion of Hannibal 3x03 "Secondo," including the reinvention of the Mischa backstory, Hannibal and Bedelia's relationship, the connection between Will and Chiyo, Pazzi and Jack, and where this leg (pardon the terminology, Dr. Gideon) of the season may be going
  • There is a question of how far we should push things on Hannibal before it moves into the territory of bad taste.
  • Familiarity between the feelings at the beginning of S2 and the beginning of S3
  • Snails, man. Fuggin snails.
  • The similarity between a lot of the somewhat nonsensical establishing shots in S3 and the ones from Twin Peaks
  • Ian has theories about how the backstory may play out. No wAIT COME BACK
  • Cleo's Antipasto and Mukozuke recaps
THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:
  • I have original thoughts. Really.
  • Highlights from Fio's notes:
    • Vic? Weird? Noooooooooooooooo
    • I dunno if I would call that guy’s comment rude, not that I’ve been in that situation before, but when someone makes a comment like Bedelia did I think asking ‘Is this that kind of party?’ is a fair fucking question, man. Note from Ian: Yeah, Hannibal seemed pretty delighted by the question. It's pretty clear that Hannibal kills Dimmond because he's a liability (and to teach Bedelia a lesson, as it were), not necessarily because of any action that could be construed as "rude."
    • Vic is an Avid Fan, hahaha
    • Ian says “we’re running short on time” with half of the episode left, everyone drink
    • Once is all you really ever need to see Hannibal Rising
    • Chiyo isn’t in Hannibal Rising (film), she’s the handmaiden of Lady Murasaki

  1. I've never gotten the impression Hannibal kills people due to rudeness. We know nothing about Cassie Boyle, Marissa Schurr may have been rude to her mother but Hannibal tells Abigail the real reason is that he was "curious". Freddie Lounds is "terribly rude" but survives. He kills Franklyn just to deprive Tobias of the satisfaction of killing him. Sutcliffe is a terrible person, but mostly for going along with Hannibal's idea. Georgia Madchen wasn't rude, just inconvenient as a possible witness, as was (more threateningly) Beverly Katz. He appears to kill Abigail Hobbs simply to spite Will.

    1. All that is for the show. In the films/books we know he had been a serial killer without much apparent connection to his victims. The one specified was the hunter with the wound man pattern, and there's no mention of him having been rude. He instructs Dolarhyde to kill Will & his family, without any reason to attribute rudeness to them. He attacked a nurse, and while she survived that was only because the institution was able to stop Hannibal and give her prompt medical attention. While the guards he killed may or may not have been rude, his reason for killing them is so he can escape.

  2. The later seasons probably are closer to the vision Fuller really wants to make, but I think the first season, without a mini-finale for an arc in the middle of the season, was the best.
I actually think Jack minimizing Will's attempted "hit" on Hannibal is more questionable than Alana's about face (given what those characters knew at the time). Her defense of Will had been based on unbelief that he would knowingly commit murder, and he destroyed that basis of trust.

  3. Lady Murasaki has actually been established on the show already. I don't remember during which season (1, I think), but during a dinner with Jack, Hannibal mentions "my aunt Murasaki."

    1. Yeah! (It was episode 1, season 2.) I'm sorry if I misspoke; I think what I meant was that I wasn't sure if we were actually going to see her in person.
