031: Hannibal 2x01 "Kaiseki" - Gone Fishin'

(I want this image to be a painting I can put on my wall.)

SPOILERS UP TO (and including) HANNIBAL 2x01 (as well as mild spoilers for 2x02)

In this episode:
  • Hannibal is BACK! Let the mental distress commence!
  • We both have been dealing with the bane of our existences, Windows 8, so please bear with us as we work out the audio issues we seem to be having. At least this time the recorder didn't eat up anyone's words.
  • Discussion of Hannibal 2x01 "Kaiseki," Hannibal and Jack's BRUTAL fight scene, the fallout of the events from last season's brain-liquifying season finale, the introduction of Cynthia Nixon's character Kade Prurnell, Will imprisoned, Bedelia in fuck shit i messed up levels of danger, and Hannibal framing Will by AHHHH WHY IS THE SOUNDTRACK ATTACKING OUR EARS.
  • Ian brings up a few things he heard on the Nerdist Writers Panel episode with Bryan Fuller, where Fuller had quite a few interesting things to say about season 2 without giving TOO much away.
  • Based on Fuller's comment that this season will echo Silence of the Lambs in a lot of ways, we speculate about how Mads Mikkelsen's performance will differ from Anthony Hopkins' if/WHEN (please be "when") they reach season 5 and tell the SotL storyline.
  • The Ravenstag is still around! Yay!

THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM:
  • There's a lot of stuff we could've talked about this episode that we didn't end up talking about (Alana and the dogs, Jack and Winston--mostly stuff with the dogs, I guess), so if there's anything in particular you'd like us to pick up, definitely comment, shoot us an email, or contact us on Tumblr/Twitter/Facebook.
  • There's a bunch of stuff I said I would link to. I will attempt to do so when I've had the chance to give the episode a second listen.
  • Highlights from Fio's timestamps:
    • 15:18 - If you could clean up what I was trying to say about the bullroarer here, you’re a saint
    • 24:30 - I’m clearly trying to say “make light of” here, why the fuck couldn’t I come up with “make light of?”
Music:
  • "This is My Design" - original song, music & lyrics by Ian. More on this as it develops.

  1. Barney is not in the Red Dragon book from what I remember, Barney has not been Hannibal Lecter's orderly the whole time Doctor Lecter was in prison (that's a fact, in Hannibal he tells that to Clarice Starling). I think he must have started working at the Baltimore Hospital for the Criminally Insane after the events of Red Dragon took place. He could have just been the nameless orderly- Will Graham is not as good with people as Clarice Starling and may not have picked up his name. (Will Graham misses other things that Clarice picks up. Will Graham notices the shine on Chilton's hand, but Clarice is the one who knows that it's from obsessively patting his hair, that kind of thing.)

  2. I called Will being imprisoned at the end of season 1, but I was wrong in thinking they'd go all the way by showing him bound and wearing the mask. Then lo and behold, the first poster for season 2 debuted. :)

The thing about Silence of the Lambs is that it's not just that they can't use the characters, they can't use the storyline at all, so unless something gets worked out, season 5 will have to be an entirely original storyline instead of the familiar plot with placeholder names. Between Miriam and Gideon and what we've seen in the first two episodes of this season, they've echoed SOTL about as closely as they legally can, and I think they've done it so much so early because they've accepted that MGM/Lifetime isn't letting those rights go, so they're clearing the waters so we can move on.

That's why I think we're seeing Beverly stepping into a Clarice level role, being both more prominently featured in the storyline and also added to the primary credits of the opening title sequence. Plus, we've all been waiting for a character to appear with some kind of a bird reference in their name... Hettienne Park is herself named after a bird. :)

So I think she'll be safe for at least the season. Having her die in Hannibal's lair would be narratively repetitive so soon after the Miriam backstory.
